Report options
Select a start date / end date
The first and last trading day to include. Your store's close of trade time is used, so a sale after midnight but before close of trade counts towards the previous trading day. Both default to today.
Show sales figures
Whether every rand figure on the report includes or excludes VAT (value-added tax or your country's equivalent sales tax). Your brand chooses which one is the default: it's always first in the list, marked (Brand default), and already selected when you open the report. If your brand has chosen exclusive, the list reads Exclusive (Brand default) and Inclusive.
Choose Inclusive to see the money customers actually paid. Choose Exclusive to look at profitability, where VAT isn't your money. The line under the report title and the two rand column headings tell you which one you're looking at, for example Parent item gross sales (incl VAT) R or Additional upsize gross sales (excl VAT) R.
The report at a glance
The dates are trading days. If your store's close of trade is later than midnight (say 02:00), the line reads From Mon 12 Oct 2026 02:00 until Mon 19 Oct 2026 02:00 * and the asterisk is explained at the foot of each page: sales between midnight and close of trade are included in the previous day's sales. The line under the title says excluding VAT when you choose Exclusive.
- The column headings, at the top of the list and repeated on every page.
- Menu items and their upsells: one line per menu item that was sold with upsells, with its upsells listed underneath.
- Grand total: the totals of all the items on the report.
The footer of every page shows when the report was run and by whom, the store name and code, the report version and the page number. If nothing was sold with an upsell in the period, the report shows a picture with the message Can't find any information for the selected date range instead.
Menu items and their upsells
A parent menu item is the item a customer ordered, such as a Cheeseburger. Its upsells are everything rung up with it on the same order line: extras, upsizes, sauces and other customisations. Only parent items that were sold with at least one upsell appear. The example uses Inclusive.
| Parent menu item (PLU) ↳ Upsell Menu Item (PLU) | Qty | Parent item gross sales (incl VAT) R | Additional upsize gross sales (incl VAT) R | Percentage increase |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cheeseburger (101) 1 | 40.0 2 | 3 596.00 3 | 516.00 4 | 14% 5 |
| ↳ Bacon (301) 6 | 18.0 | 270.00 | ||
| ↳ Extra Patty (302) | 6.0 | 150.00 | ||
| ↳ Extra Cheese (303) | 12.0 | 96.00 | ||
| Chips (210) | 30.0 | 897.00 | 328.00 | 37% |
| ↳ Large Upgrade (311) | 22.0 | 220.00 | ||
| ↳ Cheese Sauce (312) | 9.0 | 108.00 |
1 Parent menu item (PLU)
The menu item the customer ordered, with its PLU code in brackets. Items without a PLU code show the name only. If the item was renamed during the period, the name it had on the most recent sale is shown. Items are listed with the one whose upsells brought in the most money first.
2 Qty
How many of this item were sold with at least one upsell. Cheeseburgers sold plain aren't counted here. Whole numbers show a faint .0.
3 Parent item gross sales
What the item itself brought in on those sales, before discounts: 40 Cheeseburgers at R89.90 is 3 596.00. The upsells are not included in this figure. With Exclusive the VAT is taken off: the same Cheeseburgers show as 3 126.96.
4 Additional upsize gross sales
What all the upsells sold with this item added on top, before discounts. It's the total of the upsell lines underneath: 270.00 + 150.00 + 96.00 = 516.00.
5 Percentage increase
How much the upsells added, as a percentage of the item's own sales: 516.00 is 14% of 3 596.00. Every R100 of Cheeseburgers brought in about R14 of extras. If the item itself was sold at R0 (for example a "build your own" base where only the toppings are charged), there's nothing to compare against and the report shows 0%.
6 Upsell lines
Each upsell sold with this item, with its PLU code, how many were sold and what they brought in, before discounts. The best-selling upsell by value is first. Upsells with no category in your menu are grouped as options; free options (for example "No onions") are listed too, with 0.00.
- ↳ (arrow)
- Marks an upsell line, sold with the parent menu item above it.
The same item can appear in more than one place. Chips ordered on their own is a parent item with its own upsells, while chips added to a burger as an extra is an upsell of that burger.
Grand total
At the end of the report, the totals of every item on it.
| Parent item gross sales (incl VAT) R | Additional upsize gross sales (incl VAT) R | Percentage increase | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand total: 1 | 4 493.00 | 844.00 | 19% 2 |
| The sales of menu items that have no upsells are excluded from this report and therefore from the grand total sales figure. 3 | |||
1 Grand total
The total parent item sales (3 596.00 + 897.00 = 4 493.00) and the total upsell sales (516.00 + 328.00 = 844.00) of every item on the report.
2 Overall percentage increase
Total upsell sales as a percentage of total parent item sales: 844.00 is 19% of 4 493.00. Use it to compare one week with another.
3 What isn't counted
Items sold without any upsell are left out completely, so the grand total is not your store's total sales. Use the Product Sales or Sales Summary report for those.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the parent item's quantity lower than on the Product Sales report?
This report only counts an item when it was sold with at least one upsell. A Cheeseburger sold plain isn't on this report at all, so the quantity and the parent item gross sales are lower than your total sales of that item.
Why is the grand total not the same as my total sales?
Items sold without upsells are left out, and all figures are before discounts. For your full sales use the Product Sales or Sales Summary report.
What counts as an upsell?
Everything rung up with an item on the same order line: extras, upsizes, sauces, substitutions and other customisations. Free options (for example "No onions") count as upsells too and show with 0.00, so an item can appear with a 0% increase if its only upsells were free.
Why does an item show 0% when it clearly had paid upsells?
The item itself was sold at R0, for example a "build your own" base where only the toppings are charged. A percentage of R0 can't be worked out, so the report shows 0%. The Additional upsize gross sales column still shows what the upsells brought in.
Are discounts taken off?
No. Every figure is gross sales: the price on the menu times the quantity, before any discounts or vouchers. The line under the report title says so.
Should I choose Inclusive or Exclusive?
Choose Inclusive to see what customers paid. Choose Exclusive to look at profitability, because the VAT isn't your money. Your brand sets which one is the default; you can change it each time you run the report.
Are voided items and voided invoices included?
No. Voided invoices and items voided off an invoice are left out, both as parent items and as upsells.
Why does an item appear twice, once as a parent and once as an upsell?
Because it was sold both ways. Chips ordered on their own is a parent item; chips added to a burger as an extra is an upsell of the burger. Each sale is counted once, in the place it was rung up.
Some sales from just after midnight are missing from today.
Your store's close of trade is after midnight, so those sales belong to the previous trading day. The asterisk next to the dates and the note at the foot of the page tell you when this applies.
