# Financial - Tax

The Tax report shows the tax your store charged on its sales (output tax) and the tax it paid on stock purchases (input tax) for one month, day by day. Store managers, franchisees and accountants use it to prepare VAT returns and to check that the VAT on sales looks right.

Updated Mon 26 Oct 2026

## Running the report

1

Open **Reports** for your store and choose **Tax report** under **Financial**.

2

Set **Select your year** and **Select your month**. Both start on the current month.

3

Run the report. You get the **Output tax** on page 1 and the **Input tax** on page 2, each with one line per trading day and a total at the bottom.

**Run it for a finished month**For your VAT return, run the report after the month has ended and all deliveries for the month have been captured and finalized as GRVs. Export it to PDF or Excel to send to your accountant.

## The report at a glance

Bob's Burgers Times Square

Tax report

For September 2026 \*

Legal entity: Bob's Burgers Times Square (Pty) Ltd VAT registration number: 4000000000

The report covers the trading days of the chosen month. When your store's close of trade is after midnight, an **\*** appears after the month and the footer explains it, for example: *\* This store has set the close of trade time to 02:00. Therefore sales between midnight and 02:00 are included in the previous days sales.* A sale at 01:30 on Wednesday morning is counted on Tuesday.

Your store's **Legal entity** and **VAT registration number** print at the top so the report can go straight to your accountant.

1. [Output tax](https://help.aurapos.com/en/article/financial-tax#output): the tax on your sales, per trading day.
2. [Input tax](https://help.aurapos.com/en/article/financial-tax#input): the tax on your stock purchases, per trading day.

## Output tax

Output tax is the tax you charged and collected from customers on your sales. Each line is one trading day of the month (days without sales are left out). Example, shortened to five days:

| Date 1 | Turnover
excl taxes 2 | +VAT 3 | \=Turnover
incl taxes 4 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Tue 01 Sep 26 | 15 860.87 | 2 379.13 | 18 240.00 |
| Wed 02 Sep 26 | 18 656.96 | 2 798.54 | 21 455.50 |
| Thu 03 Sep 26 | 8 582.61 | 1 287.39 | 9 870.00 |
| Fri 04 Sep 26 | 10 708.70 | 1 606.30 | 12 315.00 |
| Sat 05 Sep 26 | 13 026.52 | 1 953.98 | 14 980.50 |
| Total 5 | 66 835.66 | 10 025.34 | 76 861.00 |

### 1 Date

The trading day, printed as **Tue 01 Sep 26**. Sales after midnight but before your close of trade count on the day before.

### 2 Turnover excl taxes

What your customers paid for the day, without tax. It includes delivery charges and is after discounts. Voided sales are left out.

### 3 VAT

The tax saved on each invoice when it was rung up, after discounts and including the VAT on delivery charges. If your store charges more than one tax (for example a tourism levy as well as VAT), each tax gets its own column, each with a **+** above it.

### 4 Turnover incl taxes

What your customers paid, including tax. On every line, **Turnover excl taxes** plus the tax columns equals **Turnover incl taxes**.

### 5 Total

The month's totals. These are the sales and output tax figures for your VAT return.

**VAT looks too low?**The report shows the VAT that was saved on each invoice. If menu items were set up without a tax rate, they were sold without VAT and the report shows that. Divide the **VAT** total by **Turnover excl taxes**: the result should be close to your standard VAT rate. If it's much lower, ask your brand to check the tax rate on your menu items.

## Input tax

Input tax is the tax you paid on purchases related to your business. Here it comes from your stock deliveries (GRVs). Each line is one trading day on which stock was received or returned (days without any are left out).

| Date | Purchases
excl taxes 1 | +Taxes 2 | \=Purchases
incl taxes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Wed 02 Sep 26 | 4 000.00 | 600.00 | 4 600.00 |
| Fri 04 Sep 26 | 1 000.00 | 150.00 | 1 150.00 |
| Sat 05 Sep 26 3 | \-200.00 | \-30.00 | \-230.00 |
| Total | 4 800.00 | 720.00 | 5 520.00 |

*Taxes are calculated from finalized and locked GRV's that have moved stock. Draft and archived GRV's are excluded. Returned and credited GRV's are deducted. Each GRV counts on the trading day and time that the stock was received or returned, not the GRV date.*

### 1 Purchases excl taxes

The cost of the stock you received on that trading day, excluding tax. Stock returned or credited is taken off.

### 2 Taxes

The tax on those GRVs. **Purchases excl taxes** plus **Taxes** equals **Purchases incl taxes**.

### 3 Returns

Stock returned to a supplier, or credited by a supplier, shows as a negative amount and reduces your input tax for the month.

## Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't my VAT match the standard VAT rate on my turnover?

The report shows the VAT that was saved on each invoice when it was rung up. Items set up without a tax rate, or zero-rated items, carry no VAT, so the VAT for the day is lower. Small rand-value discounts can also change it slightly. If the VAT is far below the standard rate, ask your brand to check the tax rate on your menu items. The report can't add VAT that wasn't charged on the invoice.

Why is a day missing from the report?

A day only shows when there were sales on it (output tax) or stock received or returned on it (input tax). A day when the store was closed doesn't appear.

Why are my after-midnight sales on the previous day?

Your store's close of trade is after midnight, so a sale at 01:30 belongs to the trading day that started the day before. The **\*** after the month and the note in the footer tell you when this applies. The month starts and ends at your close of trade time too.

Why doesn't the VAT match a calculation on the day's total turnover?

Tax is worked out and rounded on each invoice, then added up for the day. Small differences of a cent or two against a calculation on the day's total are normal.

Does the VAT match the Invoice audit report?

Yes. Both reports use the VAT saved on the invoice. Add up the VAT of every invoice for a trading day on the Invoice audit report and you get the VAT for that day here.

Why isn't a delivery in the input tax?

Only finalized or locked GRVs that have moved stock are included. Draft and archived GRVs are left out until they are finalized. A GRV that is still a draft on the last day of the month will show in the month you finalize it.

Why is a delivery on a different day than the GRV date?

The report places each GRV on the trading day and time that the stock was received or returned, in your store's local time. If you captured a GRV a day or two after the delivery, it shows on the day the stock moved. A delivery received after midnight but before your close of trade counts on the previous trading day, the same as your sales.

Why did my input tax go down on a day I returned stock?

Stock returned to a supplier, and credits from a supplier, are deducted. A day with more returns than purchases shows a negative amount.

Is the input tax everything I can claim?

No. It only covers stock captured on GRVs. Other business expenses, such as rent, equipment or services, aren't in AuraPOS, so your accountant adds those separately.
